Art of Touring show opens tomorrow

I have a few photographs in the Art of Touring show (“A multi-media exhibition of work by musicians, inspired life on the road while touring”) that opens tomorrow night at Johalla Projects in Chicago, including the two above: The Artist Sometimes Known as Prince, from a 1993 Chicago Theater performance, and Cat Power at the Pitchfork Music Festival in 2007.

Participating artists include Ken Vandermark, Pat Sansone (Wilco, Autumn Defense), Tim Rutili (Red Red Meat, Califone), and Steve Krakow (Plastic Crimewave Sound, The Secret History of Chicago Music). A list of all artists can be viewed here.

Opening Reception: July 16. 2010, 7-11pm

Chicago Reader cover: Occidental Brothers

I shot the lovely and talented Samba Mapangala and Nathaniel Braddock of the fabulous Occidental Brothers Dance Band International for the cover of this week’s Chicago Reader. In addition I shot Mission of Burma and Orquestra Contemporanea de Olinda for the Photo Pit page in the same issue.

The Goblins

Here’s a picture of the sensational masked rock ensemble The Goblins, not to be confused with Italian prog-rockers Goblin, the California metal band Goblin Cock, or the Serbian punk outfit Goblini. Somebody needs to start a Wikipedia page on these guys.

Bombay Video: one stop holiday shop

Time is running out! Bombaby Video, on Devon Avenue in Chicago, is going out of business, and prices are slashed. The place is stuffed to the gills with unusual and fascinating CDs, audio cassettes, and videos from the Indian subcontinent and beyond. The exotic titles available here for another week or two are not likely to be found at iTunes or your local hipster record store (not to mention chain stores). Head over there with a wad of cash and do some holiday shopping. Say hello to Sujay, the friendly and charismatic proprietor, and then get some delicious Indian food at one of the many Indian and Pakistani restaurants in the vicinity.
