Available Light Portrait Workshop: June 26th

This workshop, held at my Chicago studio, will begin with a friendly critique; participants are asked to bring five portraits they’ve shot. Then I’ll show a selection of portraits I’ve taken using only available/existing light (like the two shots above), and discuss how I shot them. Next I’ll demonstrate various tools for controlling and augmenting available light. After that, we’ll explore the nooks and crannies of my studio and nearby locations, and I’ll give tips on finding great light (it’s not always where you think it is, and sometimes light that first seems lackluster can be made captivating via exposure; reflecting, blocking, and/or diffusing the light; and post-processing).

For the second half, the class will split into pairs and take turns photographing each other. Reflectors, diffusers, stands, etc will be available for use. I’ll spend time with each student as they shoot.

I held my first photography workshop here at my studio a couple weeks ago (those are the fabulous students in the pic above), and it went really well, so I’m scheduling a couple more for February 6th (and most likely more to follow):

Sunday, February 6th, 2011 Photo Workshops with Jim Newberry

11:30AM-1:30PM: Camera Essentials (Register HERE)

How to set f-stops, shutter speeds, and ISO to control exposure, depth of field, and freezing or blurring of motion

White balance (wtf?)

Lenses: what to look for when buying lenses; how focal length affects your image; how to protect your glass; shooting close-up

RAW format: when and why to use it instead of JPG

Prerequisite: you must bring a digital camera, either a DSLR or a point and shoot that allows you to set f-stop and shutter speed manually.

2:00-4:00PM: Intro to Lighting (Register HERE)

Available light: where to find it and how to control and augment it

Speedlights: how to get great results with portable flash units (the kind that can connect to the top of your camera)

Studio strobes: basics of pro strobes and light modifiers including Octabank, soft box, umbrella, beauty dish, and grid spot

DIY lighting: using hardware store and other inexpensive light sources to create unique, effective lighting

Prerequisite: you must bring a digital camera, either a DSLR or a point and shoot that allows you to set f-stop and shutter speed manually. Also, your camera must be able to connect to a PC cord, either via a built-in PC socket, or a PC adapter that connects to your hot shoe. You should be able to find one of these adapters at Central Camera, the greatest camera store on Earth.

The introductory price for each class is a mere $40, or both for $60 (if you take them on the same day). Register for Camera Essentials here and Lighting class here. Both classes will involve shooting in the studio and one-on-one help from me.

Portraiture crash course: January 15th

I’m teaching a photography portrait workshop on Saturday, January 15th, from 12-4. This is the first of what I hope will be many more photography classes. You can sign up here. The introductory price for the first workshop is a mere $20. Here’s what’s planned for the 15th:

Each student will bring 5 portraits they’ve shot, and we’ll have a friendly critique. Then a crash course, with introductions to:

lighting: studio lighting, available light, and hardware store lighting (flashlights, led lights, fluorescents, etc)
using your camera’s manual settings to control exposure and depth of field
interacting with your subject to make expressive, natural, captivating portraits
environmental portraiture

After the crash course, students will shoot portraits in and around my studio. I’ll spend time with each student (answering questions, offering guidance) as they photograph. There will be an optional critique at the end of the class: anyone who wants to bring a laptop and do a quick (15 minute) edit of the shots they make that day can have them critiqued.

This workshop is open to everyone, regardless of previous photography experience. There is one prerequisite though: you must bring a digital camera (DSLR or point and shoot) that allows you to set aperture and shutter speed manually. (Email me if you have questions about this.)
