I’m happy to be participating in the Chicago Alderman Project, an art show which involves fifty artists depicting the fifty aldermen of the Chicago City Council. I shot Scott Waguespack for this project–he represents my ward, the 32nd–at my studio, where we were joined by a writer and photographer from the Chicago News Cooperative who covered the shoot for a story that was recently published in the New York Times (I can hardly believe that my longtime dream of having my ass depicted in a world class periodical has now been fulfilled). There’s an opening reception for the show this Friday, from 7-11PM at Johalla Projects Gallery, at 1561 N. Milwaukee Ave.

I had a chance to get a sneak peek at the show, and there’s some great work by artists including Derek Erdman, Casey Stockdon, Jennifer Greenburg, Andrea Jablonski, and Melissa Ann Pinney.

Denise Keim/Jim Newberry photo show this Saturday night

The enormously talented Denise Keim and I are teaming up this Saturday for a one night, two-stop photo show. I’ll be showing brand new work along with some old favorites, including stereo (3D) slides. Denise has a plethora of gorgeous black & white prints. I’ll be at my studio, and Denise will be at hers for the duration of the show (we’re hoping to have a video linkup). Look for the stream of indicator stop bath on the sidewalk between the two buildings. Please stop by both studios Saturday night if you’re in Chicago and free. Here are the addresses:

After being coaxed from his shell, the inimitable impresario Tim Tuten gives a highly energetic and tongue-in-cheek tour of the fantastic cardboard metropolis called The Exquisite City. I shot this video at the original opening of the exhibit at the Viaduct Theater last November. A few weeks ago the show moved to the Chicago Tourism Center, where it remains until March 15th. The show was curated by Kathleen Judge and features work by a bunch of talented artists. Check out the Exquisite City site for more info.

Walker Evans’ collection of 9,000 postcards

Yesterday the Met opened an exhibit of postcards collected by the great photographer Walker Evans. I can’t wait until the skies of New York City are filled with low-flying triplanes and bridges run through skyscrapers—this postcard depicts a future I can believe in!!

3D photos at Pecha Kucha Night: Tues 12/2

I’ll be projecting 3D/stereo photos as part of Pecha Kucha Night this Tuesday at Martyrs’. Everyone attending gets free 3D glasses (which are required to get the 3D effect from anaglyph stereo photos like the one above)! But what is Pecha Kucha Night? Here’s a description from the PKN site:

Pecha Kucha Night, devised by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham (Klein Dytham architecture), was conceived in 2003 as a place for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public.

But as we all know, give a mike to a designer (especially an architect) and you’ll be trapped for hours. The key to Pecha Kucha Night is its patented system for avoiding this fate. Each presenter is allowed 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds each – giving 6 minutes 40 seconds of fame before the next presenter is up. This keeps presentations concise, the interest level up, and gives more people the chance to show.

Pecha Kucha (which is Japanese for the sound of conversation) has tapped into a demand for a forum in which creative work can be easily and informally shown, without having to rent a gallery or chat up a magazine editor. This is a demand that seems to be global – as Pecha Kucha Night, without any pushing, has spread virally to over 100 cities across the world.

I’ve been to a PKN at Martyrs–it’s much funner than it sounds, I promise. Here’s the list of presenters for Tuesday night’s event:

Shannon Playford art show in Portland

Speaking of Portland artists who used to live in Chicago, paintings by the enchanting Shannon Playford will be on exhibit at Portland Art Open 2008 this Friday through Sunday. Opening reception this Friday, September 26th at 6PM, at Playford’s home and studio: 4711 NE 26th Avenue.

Emily Counts art show in NYC

Art shows: Drag City, Erdman, Hernandez De Luna

Drag City presents “Chances Are the Comets in Our Future: A Visual Introduction to Drag City” at Gallery 400 through October 4th. I haven’t been over there yet, but I’m pretty sure I’m representin’, along with some greats:

On display will be covers, artworks and more from groups such as Bonnie “Prince” Billy, The Red Krayola, Royal Trux, Gastr del Sol, Neil Hamburger, Pavement, Weird War and USA; with designs by Art and Language, David Berman, Barbara Bloom, Gene Booth, Bill Callahan, Brian Calvin, Neil Michael Haggerty, Stephen Prina, Albert Oehlen, Savage Pencil, Roman Signer, Mick Turner, Christopher Williams and more.

Carl Hammer Gallery will be exhibiting work by legendary stamp artist Michael Hernandez De Luna; artist’s reception and book release this Friday, September 5th, from 5:30-8:00 PM. Here’s a portrait of Michael with another illustrious Chicago artist who makes lickable art:

For you Seattleites, be sure not to miss “My Mother’s Troubles With Drugs: Paintings by Derek Erdman” at The Anne Bonny. The artist (and my future stepson) Derek Erdman will be at the opening closing reception, which is this Friday, September 5th Thursday, October 2nd, from 4-8 PM. (and/or he’ll be at closing reception–I’ll get back to you on that…)
