movies xxx incense underwear Print sale at Hideout: Tuesday, Dec 13th

Tomorrow night I’ll be taking part in the Hideout Holiday Sale, selling fine art photographic prints alongside many other very talented artists, listed below. Come on by and have a drink; even if you don’t have a lot of money to spend on art, there will be a bevy of first rate people to mingle with, and I’ll be there too.

I shot the picture above on Maxwell Street not long before it was completely wiped out.

Todd Trainer at drums with Shellac 785x489 Friday photo exhibit: 15 years of life at the Hideout

UPDATE: Here’s a link to the interview. Thanks to Alison Cuddy for having me on the show, and to Andrea Jablonski, the hardworking curator of the exhibit.

This Friday I’m participating in an exhibit with 9 other photographers. We’re showing photographs depicting life at Chicago’s greatest music venue, the Hideout. I’ll be on WBEZ’s Eight Forty-Eight tomorrow morning discussing my pictures for this show.

Above is a portrait of Shellac‘s comely drummer and flower arranger, Todd Trainer. I shot it at the Touch and Go 25th Anniversary concert, which was hosted by the Hideout.

soul train dancer chicago 658x494 Chic a go go Soul Train dance party at Expo 72

Last Friday I was fortunate to have an assignment shooting video for a Chic-a-go-go hosted Soul Train party . I can’t tell you how happy it made me to see a roomful of people dancing in 1970s style without the slightest trace of irony. Everyone was having so much fun. Thanks to impresario Jake Austen, host Mia Park, the beautiful, inspring dancers, DJ Bob Abrahamian, and the great City of Chicago.

The woman in this picture was blowing everyone away, dancing with abandon in her motorized wheelchair. I pity the fool that challenges her in a Valor Game.

Be sure to check out the superb exhibit of photos taken on the Soul Train set during its heyday.

On Monday I had a swell assignment—photographing Chicago Imagist painter Jim Nutt at the Museum of Contemporary Art for an article in today’s Reader. His MCA show Jim Nutt: Coming Into Character opens this Saturday.

I’m happy to be participating in the Chicago Alderman Project, an art show which involves fifty artists depicting the fifty aldermen of the Chicago City Council. I shot Scott Waguespack for this project–he represents my ward, the 32nd–at my studio, where we were joined by a writer and photographer from the Chicago News Cooperative who covered the shoot for a story that was recently published in the New York Times (I can hardly believe that my longtime dream of having my ass depicted in a world class periodical has now been fulfilled). There’s an opening reception for the show this Friday, from 7-11PM at Johalla Projects Gallery, at 1561 N. Milwaukee Ave.

I had a chance to get a sneak peek at the show, and there’s some great work by artists including Derek Erdman, Casey Stockdon, Jennifer Greenburg, Andrea Jablonski, and Melissa Ann Pinney.

Here’s an outtake from my photo session with Waguespack.

keim newberry web1 500x357 Denise Keim/Jim Newberry photo show this Saturday night

The enormously talented Denise Keim and I are teaming up this Saturday for a one night, two-stop photo show. I’ll be showing brand new work along with some old favorites, including stereo (3D) slides. Denise has a plethora of gorgeous black & white prints. I’ll be at my studio, and Denise will be at hers for the duration of the show (we’re hoping to have a video linkup). Look for the stream of indicator stop bath on the sidewalk between the two buildings. Please stop by both studios Saturday night if you’re in Chicago and free. Here are the addresses:

After being coaxed from his shell, the inimitable impresario Tim Tuten gives a highly energetic and tongue-in-cheek tour of the fantastic cardboard metropolis called The Exquisite City. I shot this video at the original opening of the exhibit at the Viaduct Theater last November. A few weeks ago the show moved to the Chicago Tourism Center, where it remains until March 15th. The show was curated by Kathleen Judge and features work by a bunch of talented artists. Check out the Exquisite City site for more info.

Yesterday the Met opened an exhibit of postcards collected by the great photographer Walker Evans. I can’t wait until the skies of New York City are filled with low-flying triplanes and bridges run through skyscrapers—this postcard depicts a future I can believe in!!

MMJ takes the stage at the Chicago Theatre tomorrow and Sunday night. Here are two pictures I shot of the band–both for Magnet–the top in 2001 and the other in ’07.

stereo photo jim newberry chicago 3D photos at Pecha Kucha Night: Tues 12/2

Stereo anaglyph by Jim Newberry

I’ll be projecting 3D/stereo photos as part of Pecha Kucha Night this Tuesday at Martyrs’. Everyone attending gets free 3D glasses (which are required to get the 3D effect from anaglyph stereo photos like the one above)! But what is Pecha Kucha Night? Here’s a description from the PKN site:

Pecha Kucha Night, devised by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham (Klein Dytham architecture), was conceived in 2003 as a place for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public.

But as we all know, give a mike to a designer (especially an architect) and you’ll be trapped for hours. The key to Pecha Kucha Night is its patented system for avoiding this fate. Each presenter is allowed 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds each – giving 6 minutes 40 seconds of fame before the next presenter is up. This keeps presentations concise, the interest level up, and gives more people the chance to show.

Pecha Kucha (which is Japanese for the sound of conversation) has tapped into a demand for a forum in which creative work can be easily and informally shown, without having to rent a gallery or chat up a magazine editor. This is a demand that seems to be global – as Pecha Kucha Night, without any pushing, has spread virally to over 100 cities across the world.

I’ve been to a PKN at Martyrs–it’s much funner than it sounds, I promise. Here’s the list of presenters for Tuesday night’s event:

* Derek Erdman
* Arnold Kasemsarn
* Dr Josh Kurutz
* Kate Lorenz
* Jean Linsner
* Jon Mueller
* Charlotte Nelms
* Jim Newberry
* Ryan Schultz
* Kathy Weaver

You can see the fantastic work of Emily Counts at Plane Space in Greenwich Village. Emily resides in Portland, Oregon, but used to live in Chicago, where I shot this portrait of her, wearing one of her creations:

Ana Gagliardi is single and had a brilliant idea for an art show. She asked 12 photographers to “interpret” her and uploaded the portraits to her Match.com profile, as well as exhibit the prints at Gallery 101 in Chicago. The show will be up until mid-July; the gallery is by appointment only. You can reach Gallery 101 at 312-624-8291. My portrait is below; it’s called “Expectations.”

From tomorrow’s New York Times:

…this week the Indianapolis Museum of Art plans to announce that it has acquired a trove of work and correspondence by Weegee, the crepuscular, stogie-smoking New York photographer whose visceral pictures became a template not only for artists like Diane Arbus but also for much of the uncomfortably close tabloid imagery that exists today. The museum described the acquisition as a partial gift and partial purchase from the dealer.
The trunk is assumed to have once been the possession of Wilma Wilcox, a social worker who was Weegee’s companion and lived with him from 1957 until his death in 1968. Upon her death in 1993, she bequeathed the bulk of his work — thousands of prints and negatives — to the International Center of Photography in Manhattan. How the trunk full of prints and 62 letters to Ms. Wilcox from Weegee (born Usher Fellig in what is now Ukraine, and later known as Arthur Fellig) ended up in Kentucky is a mystery that neither the Indianapolis Museum nor the dealer, Steve H. Nowlin, has solved.

“People who work in the daytime are suckers,” he once said. Before the publication of his first book, “Naked City,” made him famous in 1945, he lived in a cheap room near police headquarters and was said to be so accustomed to working on the run that he once developed a picture of a prizefight in a subway motorman’s cab while rushing back to a newspaper office.

I hadn’t been to the Venice Canals before; a very lovely site for a nocturnal stroll. For you “hate America first” folks, just try finding something like this in a foreign country. Why don’t you try the “Old Europe?” I didn’t think so. (Photos by Jim Newberry)
